Burn survivors and their loved ones have long recognized that some symptoms linger long after the initial burn injury. We want to understand how our lives are impacted by a burn, years – even decades – after the initial injury.
We have been working with research partners like Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas, and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center to understand the long term impact of a burn injury, broaden the perspective, and ensure that the priorities of individuals living with a burn are addressed in research studies.
Population studies have linked burn injury with increased risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, nervous system disorders, diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders, gastrointestinal disease, infections, anxiety, and depression. Understanding burn injury as a chronic disease may help with developing preventative treatments and screenings to improve long term health outcomes.
